It all started with an email from Saxony. The Zierow siblings asked if we needed warm bonnets for the sailors. A report about the Seamen’s Mission was the catalyst for this idea.
They have been knitting for charitable institutions for some time, including teddy bears for ambulances and hospitals. But the idea of knitting something for sailors this year didn’t let them go.
“Yes, of course,” was our answer and together with her mother and a friend, they set to work. It was very important to them to knit hats without bobbles so that they could also be worn under helmets! As they were on vacation in Kellenhusen this year anyway, they brought the hats to us at the Seamen’s Club and we were overwhelmed. There were over 80 bonnets on the pool table and they were given to us. We will now distribute them to the sailors in the fall!
Seamen’s deacon Marco Folchnandt couldn’t resist trying on a cap! “Very cozy and warm,” was his verdict!
Many thanks to the hard-working knitters and for anyone who has now come up with an idea: “Yes! We can always use hats and knitted socks!
